2020 Social Media Statistics in Review

2020 was anything but an ordinary year, and that played out on social media too. Here are a few 2020 social media statistics that we found interesting.

Time Spent on Social Media

First, let’s take a look at how our time spent on social media evolved over the last five years.

In 2015, people aged 16 – 64 reported spending on average 111 minutes (1 hour and 51 minutes) a day on social media. The most current information for 2020 now shows people spend, on average, 145 minutes (2 hours and 25 minutes) on social media each day. That’s about one waking day of life every week! Wow!

Personally, I would have expected a much bigger jump between 2019 and 2020. It just shows how much time we were already spending on social media in 2019 that the jump wasn’t more pronounced!

Instagram Stories

If your business isn’t utilizing Stories on Instagram, it’s time to reconsider. 50% of people who are active on Instagram use and engage with Stories. Source: https://sproutsocial.com/insights/social-media-statistics/

Most Instagram users also express that they see the Stories updates from their favourite brands more often than they see regular organic posts. This isn’t surprising with the algorithm updates.

Engagement Rates

How do engagement rates compare for all industries across Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram? The latest numbers are quite interesting!

While Facebook and Twitter’s engagement rates per post or tweet remained stagnant from 2019, Instagram actually dropped to 1.22% from 1.60%. Thanks, algorithms. Still, Instagram by far comes out on top for engagement per post across all industries.
