Bing Places for Business: Setup Guide and Why It Still Matters

Bing Places for Business is Microsoft’s free local business listing, the equivalent of Google Business Profile for Bing search and Bing Maps. It is the third of the three primary listings every local business should own, after Google and Apple Business Connect. Most owners skip it because Bing’s share of Canadian search is small. That is a mistake for two reasons: setup takes about fifteen minutes because Bing imports your Google profile, and Bing’s data now surfaces in far more places than Bing.com.

Where Bing Places Data Appears

Bing powers the default search box in Windows, the search in Microsoft Edge, Cortana, and the local results inside Microsoft Copilot. It also supplies results to DuckDuckGo and Yahoo, and its business data is used by Apple Maps in some regions and by a long tail of directories. Office workers on a corporate Windows laptop are often searching Bing without choosing to. A B2B service, a professional firm or anything sold to people at their desks sees a larger Bing share than the national average suggests.

For local SEO the second reason matters as much as the first: Bing Places is one of the three primary citations that search engines and data aggregators check when they decide whether your name, address and phone are trustworthy. Leaving it unclaimed means Bing shows whatever it inferred, and inferred data is where inconsistencies come from.

How to Set Up Bing Places for Business

1. Sign in

Go to bingplaces.com and sign in with a Microsoft account. Use a company account, not a personal one, for the same reason as Google and Apple: access should belong to the business.

2. Import from Google Business Profile

Bing offers to import your listing from Google Business Profile. Take it. It copies your name, address, phone, hours, categories, description and photos, and it can be set to sync periodically so changes you make on Google flow to Bing. This is the single reason Bing Places is a fifteen-minute job rather than an afternoon.

3. Claim the existing listing if one exists

If Bing already has a record for your business, claim it rather than creating a second one. Duplicates split your presence and are harder to remove later.

4. Verify

Bing verifies by phone, email, or a postcard PIN to the business address. Phone and email are immediate. If you imported from Google, Bing sometimes accepts the Google verification and skips its own.

5. Check what imported

Imports are not perfect. Confirm the category mapped correctly (Bing’s category list differs from Google’s), the pin sits on your entrance, the hours are right, and the description did not truncate. Add the fields Google does not have, such as the year established, and any Bing-specific attributes.

What to Optimize

Bing ranks local listings on the same three ideas Google does: relevance, distance and prominence. In practice the levers are a complete profile, the right primary category, current photos, and consistency with your other listings. Bing also weights the completeness score it shows you in the dashboard, so fill every field it offers. Reviews on Bing are sparse in Canada; Bing displays ratings pulled from partners such as Yelp and TripAdvisor, so those platforms indirectly shape your Bing presence.

Keep the Google sync on. Any hours change, new phone number or new photo you add to Google will reach Bing without a second login, which is how the listing stays accurate over years rather than months.

Bing Places vs Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile has the reviews, the Q&A, the posts, the messaging and the detailed performance reporting, and it drives the map pack that most local customers use. Bing Places has a simpler dashboard, fewer features and a fraction of the audience, but it is nearly free to maintain once synced and it reaches an audience that skews toward desktop, office and older users. Treat Google as the primary and Bing as a mirror that must never be allowed to drift.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bing Places for Business free?

Yes. There is no paid tier. Bing sells advertising separately through Microsoft Advertising, which is unrelated to the listing.

Does Bing Places help Google rankings?

Not directly; Google does not rank on Bing data. It helps local SEO by keeping a primary citation consistent and by capturing searches on Windows, Edge, Copilot and DuckDuckGo that Google never sees.

How do I sync Bing Places with Google Business Profile?

During setup choose Import from Google Business Profile, sign in to the Google account that manages the profile, and enable periodic sync. You can trigger a manual sync from the Bing Places dashboard at any time.

Can I add multiple locations?

Yes. Bing Places supports bulk upload via spreadsheet for chains and multi-location businesses, and the Google import brings all locations the Google account manages.

Where This Fits

Bing Places belongs in the first month of a local SEO programme, set up the same week as Apple Business Connect and checked once a quarter. With all three primary listings claimed and matching, the rest of your citations have something authoritative to agree with.
