Contractor SEO: Local SEO for Home Service Businesses

Contractor SEO helps homeowners find a business that handles their job in their area. For roofers, plumbers, electricians, HVAC companies and renovation firms, that means accurate business information, useful service pages and a clear route to request help. This guide covers the service-area rules, Google Business Profile improvements, reviews and content that supports a homeowner’s decision.

Match the Page to the Homeowner’s Need

An urgent repair search needs clear availability, service coverage and a working phone number. A planned project search needs examples, an explanation of the process and a useful enquiry form. A research question needs an answer that helps the homeowner understand their options.

Choose topics from actual enquiries and search data. Do not advertise emergency or round-the-clock availability unless the business can deliver it. Make service limitations clear before asking someone to submit a form.

Follow the Service-Area Business Rules

If customers do not visit your business address, hide it from the public profile and define the areas you actually serve. Google’s service-area guidance uses places such as cities and postal codes rather than a radius. It permits up to 20 areas and says the overall area generally should stay within about two hours’ driving time of the business base.

A business that both receives customers and travels to them may qualify as a hybrid business. Showing its address requires an eligible customer-facing location, including the applicable staffing and signage conditions. A yard, home office or rented mailing address should not be presented as a storefront just to target another city.

Google describes local ranking through relevance, distance and prominence. Listing a city as a service area does not guarantee visibility there. Build the website around the services and places you genuinely cover, with clear enquiry routes.

Make the Profile Match the Business

Choose the closest available primary category for the business’s main work, with additional categories only for genuine activities. Describe the services you provide, keep contact information current and use accurate hours. Follow the verification options shown for your profile rather than assuming a particular method will be offered.

Publish real project, team and vehicle photos with the necessary permissions. Remove customer-identifying details where appropriate. Review the available contact features and enable only those someone will monitor. Our Google Business Profile tips and verification guide cover these distinct tasks.

Request Honest Reviews

Choose a consistent point after completed work to send a neutral review invitation. Participation should be voluntary. Do not offer a discount or gift, request a positive rating, or tell customers to include a trade, town or employee name. Avoid selecting only customers who first say they are satisfied.

Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking, but it does not publish a required review count or a fixed weighting for review recency. Reply helpfully and protect customer privacy. The Google reviews guide explains a repeatable process, and review-response guidance covers public replies.

Build Substantial Service Pages

Explain what the service includes, which problems it addresses, how assessment and quoting work, and what information a customer should provide. Add authorised project examples and the actual materials or systems you work with. State warranty, licensing and insurance details only when they accurately apply to the business and job.

For permit or technical requirements, point readers to the relevant local authority or qualified trade professional. Requirements can depend on location and scope. Keep enquiry forms practical: service, location, contact details and an optional project description can help the team assess fit without promising an instant quote.

Create Location Content When It Adds Value

A city page needs a distinct purpose and useful evidence, such as local projects, a genuine branch or specific service arrangements. Avoid manufacturing office locations or cloning pages with place names swapped. Consolidate overlapping material when one useful service-area page would answer the same questions.

There is no magic number of city pages. Decide whether each page helps a homeowner choose the business, then link it naturally to relevant services and project examples. Structured data should describe the real business and match the visible page information.

Evaluate Other Discovery Routes

Check relevant trade associations, manufacturer dealer listings and business directories where the company is genuinely eligible. Assess each by its audience, accuracy and enquiry value rather than assuming every listing improves rankings. Our citation guide explains listing consistency.

Keep details accurate on Apple Business Connect and Bing Places where relevant. Track where suitable enquiries and booked jobs come from; a directory visit or website session is not proof of a completed job.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should a contractor show their address on Google?

Show it only when the location meets Google’s customer-facing business requirements. If customers do not visit the address, hide it and use an accurate service area. A qualifying hybrid business can show its address and service area.

Can I rank in every city in my service area?

Adding service areas does not guarantee rankings in those places. Google considers relevance, distance and prominence. Useful service and location content can support discovery, but it does not remove the distance factor.

Do city pages work for contractors?

A location page can be useful when it answers a distinct customer need with accurate local information. A set of near-identical pages with changed city names adds little value. Build only pages you can substantiate and maintain.

How many reviews does a contractor need?

There is no published minimum that guarantees a position. Invite genuine feedback consistently without incentives, review quotas or prescribed wording. Use reviews to understand the customer experience as well as help future customers assess the business.
